About

How do we achieve the healthcare we all want?

Every system is perfectly designed to achieve exactly the results it gets. Our healthcare system was not built to optimize for what we actually want from it. We don't have a cost problem. We don't have a quality problem. We have a value problem.

Value = Effectiveness × (Outcomes + Service) Cost

For the last twenty years I've been on a journey to understand how we got here — and to contribute, in whatever way I can, to building the healthcare we say we want and do not yet have.

It won't come from inside medicine's box. We need to learn from Apple about obsessing over the person on the receiving end, from Toyota about quality as a continuous practice, from the manager of the local Bertucci's about the quietly radical idea that a stranger can be made to feel cared for in twenty minutes. Other industries have been refining this craft for decades while medicine has too often congratulated itself on its own complexity.

And we have to hold on to the soul of medicine — the careful, deliberate application of science, to the ultimate aim: helping people feel well and live their best lives.
